GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc. staff member Joseph Michael “Mike” Tuter, E.I., recently presented at the Missouri Waste Control Coalition (MWCC) conference. The theme for this year’s conference was “The Roaring Twenties; A New Era of Environmental Prosperity”.
Mr. Tuter presented a session titled A Roaring Tale of Beneficial Reuse and Waste Reduction at a Shooting Range Complex at the 2022 MWCC Environmental Conference held July 10 – 12, 2022. Millions of pounds of lead potentially could find its way into the environment at outdoor shooting ranges. Establishing Environmental Stewardship Programs at these kinds of facilities not only reduces the potential impact of lead on the environment, but also provides a monetary incentive to recycling a commodity such as lead. Perry Memorial Conservation Area located in west central Missouri saw construction of a new modernized state of the practice outdoor shooting range to replace an existing outdoor range that was prone to flooding. The existing shooting range would be renovated to a non-residentail recreation area requiring processing and stabilization of lead impacted soils present at the existing range. This project followed the three (3) R's of waste management: Reduction through detailed site characterization, Reuse (beneficial reuse) by providing backstop improvements at the New Range, and Recyle through the recycling of lead at the Old Range. After a comprehensive site characterization, completing renovations of the Old Range would require processing of lead impacted soils to recover lead particulates and treat any soils above a certain threshold. Those soils requiring treatment would serve as a beneficial reuse at the New Range through backstop improvements. All lead recovered from processing operations at the Old Range would be taken to an approved recycler.
Mr. Tuter has a B.S. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Mike has more than 13 years of experience, working as a Civil Engineer, Project Manager and Engineering Design Technician. In his role at GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc., Mike serves as an Environmental Engineer in the Jefferson City, Missouri office, assisting with site development, stormwater design, site grading and quantity calculations, and leads our designers/drafters for CAD deliverables.
