Thomas R. Gredell, P.E., President of GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc. presented a technical session titled “Wastewater System Upgrade at Bennett Spring State Park” at the 2019 Missouri Water & Wastewater conference held at Capital Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City, MO.
Mr. Gredell has an M.S. in Civil Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri – Rolla) and has almost 40 years of regulatory experience in solid waste, hazardous waste, wastewater treatment and general civil engineering. He maintains thorough understanding of Missouri laws and regulations through his participation in various organizations, committees and workgroups.
The presentation covered the preliminary design coordination with Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), as well as Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Division of State Parks. Bennett Spring State Park is best known for its excellent trout fishing, but also offers camping, canoeing, hiking, and other recreational activities. The park began in the 1920’s and many historic structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) remain. The wastewater system is unique in that the pump station is within 150 feet of the trout fishing area and pumps wastewater across the Niangua River to an existing lagoon. Gredell Engineering designed and provided construction oversight for the replacement of the lift station and the 500 feet of old clay pipe that resulted in dramatically reduced flows, which allowed MDNR’s Division of State Parks to cancel the construction of a new and enlarged land application area, saving the state over $1.5 million.
